Chimes Pharmacy has been in existence on College Avenue for nearly a 100 years and continues to serve customers with their prescription needs. Old prescriptions date back as far as 1909. The current owner, John Gelinas, is only the third owner since the 1930's when the store featured a soda fountain, a lending library, and a liquor department.
At one time, Chimes was just one of nearly a half-dozen pharmacies on College Avenue in Oakland and Berkeley between Broadway and the UC Berkeley campus. Chimes is the only remaining prescription store.
The present owner, John Gelinas, was born in San Francisco in 1952 and began working at Chimes in 1967 as a delivery boy. He continued as a part-time employee throughout high school and while attending St. Mary's College. He Graduated from University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy in 1976 with a doctorate degree in Clinical Pharmacy. John has owned and operated the pharmacy in its present location since January of 1986.
